Brief
Redesign the existing app for GoPro that stands out in comparison to Instagram, Snapchat etc with respect to their social aspects. The current app allows for managing and editing the media that you have on a GoPro device, so make sure that these features are still there and one of the main focus of the app.
Problem Statement
To align the current GoPro Quik app in league with the likes of Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, etc without staking or losing its position as the media management and video editing app for GoPro users.
Solution
This has to be done keenly and delicately keeping the primary users (i.e. GoPro holders) in mind. This app might be used by non-GoPro users as well as it offers video editing prowess, but our primary focus are the GoPro holders. There is a chance that the primary users will get confused if the feature of social media will be added to it (is it a social media app, a media management app, or a video editing app?).
To retain current users, make them stay, and attract new users- the app has to keep a well balance between its new features (social media) and its old and main features.
Research
Observations of common practises found in popular social media apps of today:
- Vertical videos of the format 1080x1920 are the current norm. But platforms like Instagram still have a separate option on their feed for photos and videos of other formats.
- Each platform has its own set of editing tools, filters and templates that help the app stand out from the competition. For e.g. One of the primary attraction factor of Snapchat is its filters, which are one of the best in terms of variety and quality amongst most apps. Its filters like the dog face, old age, beautify etc ones are what attract and keep its users.
- Following other people and engaging with the audience/community is a key feature in any social media app’s sustenance.
Observation from reviews on Play Store:
- More flexibility in editing controls like audio and color grading are demanded. Since these were available in the previous version of the apps.
- Many of the features from the old app, which people found convenient were either made obsolete or exclusive to a subscription pack.
- When a footage is added to the studio (editing feature), it completely auto edits it. There is no option to undo the auto edit, so the users have to undo everything one by one. The user wants to edit their footage according to their taste, this feature creates a lot of friction for that to happen.
